“If only I weren’t living here….”
“If only I were more extroverted….”
“If only I had more money….”
Sometimes, people think that they’d be successful in life if only they had the right circumstances. But that’s not necessarily true. You might not have had the same life lessons and experiences had you been living elsewhere. You could get yourself involved with the wrong people if you’re too extroverted. And more money doesn’t mean that you’d be investing it in the right things.
But again, as mentioned last week, our circumstances are our own faults. That doesn’t mean that we choose our parents and birthplace, but our choice is how we handle them. Sure, others have more options to choose from, but choices are choices regardless. And from our circumstances, as good or as bad as they may seem to be, there are always privileges we can take advantage of. Let’s hear what mindset expert, Brayand Ponciano, has to say!
The points below are from the 23rd episode of the Real Estate JAM, where Brayand talks about not clinging to our excuses, creating your reality, using your privileges to your advantage, and many more! Tune in on the full episode on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.
Doing Things “In Spite Of”
Let’s start with a brutal counterpunch to ourselves. Whatever excuse you have in mind, whatever is holding you back, do your thing in spite of those things! During the podcast, Brayand brought up racism as a potential excuse that people might make. Some might be turned off from continuing their journey because some people haven’t treated them properly. It certainly is a bothering issue in society, but are you going to stop buying apartment complexes just because some people wouldn’t do business with you? You shouldn’t. In fact, while that bad side is still there, there’s another side of the coin. If some people discriminate against the minority, then that just means you have the minority to serve in your business!
Another example mentioned in the show was being a female in this male-dominated industry. Getting into a business meeting could sometimes be challenging because people look down on you, or their interest could be YOU instead of your business. It’s a shame that this happens so often, but that’s the truth of the matter. But, should that be a reason to stop? There are still aspects of it that you can use to your advantage. Other men might give you more time to speak, and they may be more yielding to you just because they’re attracted. (We might not like how that sounds, but that’s the way things happen in our society!) If you dislike dealing with these situations, you can do business with other women instead!
Stop focusing on what you don’t have, and use the benefits that you DO have.
A Personal Example
To drive the point a little more, Brayand shares his example.
During his early 20’s, he was treated as a “token brown guy” by the older white people that he networked with. He didn’t realize it initially, but he noticed that when he was introduced to other rich people, they often had him share his story of “growing in the hood and around drugs”. As people used him for his race, he took advantage of it. He used it to meet many people and chose the ones he wanted to hang out with. Now he doesn’t need those people, but he used his circumstances for himself!
