Being in the military is a difficult career in and of itself, and it’s a different story if you want to build wealth through real estate investing while you’re still in service. David Pere shares how he was able to make the most out of his day and be able to pursue a real estate business and career when you’re still in the military service through some proven time management techniques.
The following points are taken from the 21st episode of the Real Estate JAM, where David Pere narrates his journey to becoming a real estate investor while serving as an active-duty Marine and the challenges and lessons he’s learning along the way. How’s your productivity?
Have you ever created a to-do list and found yourself unable to complete even half of it before the deadline? You’re not the only one who falls into this category!
Your productivity rarely lasts the entire day, whether it’s due to left and right meetings, unread emails, or coworkers dropping in for a “brief conversation.” And for someone who is building his own business while continuing a career or a 9-5 job, productivity is a significant factor in making things work.
So, how do you strike a balance between your daily obligations and time set aside for things that are important to you, such as your business? You could experiment with time blocking and task batching.
What is Time Blocking?
Time blocking is a time management technique in which you break your day into time blocks. You may efficiently divide the workweek into time intervals by using time blocking. For instance, rather than checking your computer every minute or so to respond to emails and social media messages, you can set aside a specific time in your day for that purpose only. Instead of constantly shifting your attention from one task to another, this gives you the focus you need to complete other tasks more efficiently.
Time blocking allows you to take control of your day and have a better sense of where you want to put your energy and resources.
What is Task Batching?
Task batching is the process of “batching” or grouping related or similar tasks together and completing them all at the same time, rather than tackling them at different times throughout the day. Concentrating on one type of task can help you create a more effective working process, reduce interruptions, and mitigate procrastination.
Getting an Early Start
Aside from these two time management techniques, David also discusses how he gets up as early as 4:00 a.m. and devotes the first hours of his day to work on his business before heading to his military duty. It’s all about the drive, the discipline, and knowing what’s important to you, according to David. If it’s that important to you, you’ll make time for it.
