When you’ve been running your business for a while now, it’s critical for you to start creating and understanding your systems and processes. This could entail a lot of things. How do you ensure you’re getting leads efficiently? How do you hiring? What sorts of deals are you going for? Which ones do you avoid? There’s almost an infinite number of how’s and what’s that you need to know.
But, WHY do you need to start doing all of this? Melissa McRay Johnson gives us four reasons. The points below are from the 25th episode of the Real Estate JAM, where Melissa talks about building systems and processes, how to start with marketing, the value of core values, and much more! Tune in on the full episode on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.
Knowing the Lay of the Land
Having systems and processes in place helps you understand what’s going on in your business! Simple as that. Many investors don’t know what their people are doing – and worse, not even what they’re doing themselves! When there’s no document or rulebook to follow, you and the people working for you will tend to do whatever seems right for yourselves, regardless of it really being right.
Sure, if you’re doing things alone, you might already have a grasp of how you’re doing it. But when you introduce new people into the mix, they have to see things from your perspective and do things the way you did it. (Of course, your employees figuring how to do things better is good, but that’s a topic for another day.) From general ideas such as “we don’t deal with rude clients” to more specific steps like “click here, then here, then here to get this result,” every documented detail helps a ton.
Whenever you or another person is going to be out for a day (or even a month), you can have someone else hold the reins with much more confidence since they have a guide prepared to help them drive the ship.
A Success Meter
Your systems and processes also help you see how your business is doing. Are your strategies and plans working? When your business seems to be experiencing the same problem over and over again, you can easily take a quick look at your systems to see where the root of the issue is! Usually, it’s the gaps in the system that causes these things, which create confusion for the entire group, eventually leading to some unintended problems. Once you figure out where those gaps are, you can fix them by essentially “creating” the missing gear in the system.
Having a Mimosa on a Wednesday
Because of the efficiency that comes out of your systems and processes, you get to have more time for the things that matter. What do mimosas have to do with all of this? Well, if things are working out for you, you can spend more time with family and friends. Also, you can spend more quality time with yourself – hence, the mimosa. (If you have friends and family who can relax with you, then we’re all for it!) If you want to spend more of your hours grinding a new business or hobby, then go do it!
