Accepting Your Failures with Bill Allen

Accepting Your Failures with Bill Allen

Is the pressure of having this real estate career weighing down on you? Have you fallen into a hole that you can’t seem to get out of? Has life been throwing outrageous amounts of lemons at your face? Bill Allen, the owner of BlackJack Real Estate and visionary leader of the 7 Figure Altitude mastermind, tells us that there’s success on the other side.

These are from the sixth episode of the Real Estate JAM. In that episode, Bill Allen talks about how he (almost) lost $185K from a deal, knowing when to start hiring, and the things you need to know when building a team. If you’re interested, you can listen to it on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.

Many of us have been through terrible things in real estate, be it a financial loss, missed opportunities, or heaps of other tragedies. We might regret making these mistakes or not preparing ourselves enough, but Bill says he wouldn’t have changed anything even if he had the chance! He lost $70,000 on one of his deals when he was starting out but still considers it as an experience that had to happen. Everything is there for a reason. You might be sitting in tears for now, but days, weeks, months, or years later, you’d realize why such awful things occurred. We’re all on a journey with bumps and roadblocks along the way, and the only thing we have to do is move over them and learn from our mistakes.

Here’s a story that Bill shared during the podcast that perfectly encapsulates this idea. A few years ago, he and his wife attended a mastermind group meeting in Africa. To get there, they had to fly to Washington DC to pick up their first-class flight to Africa, which was going through London. Stopping over at London was quite important at the time because they were visiting Bill’s mother-in-law, who they just learned had breast cancer. But when they got to DC, the airport personnel said they didn’t have tickets! Apparently, the travel agent they worked with didn’t charge Bill’s card while booking the ticket. If they want to go the same day, it would cost $10,000 each person, a price they are not willing to pay. So, they had to go the next day for about $3000 which was fine – if we’re only talking about the money. The problem was, his wife’s mom was only free to meet them for a limited time. Boarding the plane a day later means they couldn’t meet up with her!

Feeling like the worst husband of all-time, Bill watched his wife in tears. After forcefully accepting the situation, they stayed over with Bill’s uncle’s place for a day. Surprisingly, Bill’s mom and grandmother were in town and had the opportunity to spend some time with them before they took the flight to Africa the following day.

A few months later, Bill suddenly receives news about his grandmother’s passing. Needless to say, he was shocked. As he sat at the funeral, Bill realized that the airport fiasco in Washington was all by design. Had that travel agent done their job correctly, they still would have had more opportunities to see Bill’s mother-in-law later on, but not his grandmother. Bill would not have seen his grandmother one last time.

The story might not have been real estate-related, but the lesson still applies. Our mindset towards failure and mistakes pretty much impacts every aspect of our lives! As mentioned earlier, all of us are in our own adventure with our own battles to fight. Sure, some people are “born” into success, but even they have burdens to bear and have to work to get to where they want. Think about successful people’s children. They either have to work hard to live up to their parents’ names or make a name for themselves. Otherwise, they’d crumble under the pressure. The same goes for us. On the other side of our failures and pain is success, but we can’t get there if we stop now.

If you’re in the same boat as Bill was at the time, or even in a much troubling situation, just keep at it, stand up, and move forward. There’s light at the end of that tunnel.
